I have yet to finish it, but have heard so much about a big portion of the book is all about whaling, more informative than fiction there as well. However, even though there is a bit of nonfiction within, the book as a whole is a fabricated tale. Just as the book you mentioned, I am sure. If it were catagorized as nonfiction, that would mean the other things mentioned within are true as well. There are lots of true things written throughout many fiction books, that doesn't mean the entire thing is. Look at Melville in Moby Dick.
