There are probably lots to choose from but I would strongly recomend a pop-up book. I still remember my first pop-up book. At this age he would probably get more out of the book you choose if it had the visual stimulation and added participation that you get with a pop-up book.

What is the reading level of your four year old? Does he(I presume it is a boy?)read at all? I think it’s great he should want to study about outer space. I’m not current what there is right now. I would contact bookstores in your area as well a stores which sell educational materials. Call the library. Any one of them will know good books on space for that age group. Good luck, sounds like you’re off to a good start.

The Boston Globe-Horn Book Magazine Award for best nonfiction picture book was just announced, and it’s one your four year old should enjoy. “If You Decide to Go to the Moon” by Faith McNulty, illustrated by Steven Kellogg, is really a picture book, but it is educational in a very accessible way. A young boy takes a rocket trip to the moon, and briefly explores it in his spacesuit till his air tank is about empty and he has to return to the ship. The artwork is detailed but not overly so, and a pretty accurate depiction of the surface of the moon. I highly recommend checking it out from your public library!
