I read the entire Dune series through high school and college and fell in love with those complex worlds just like you. Have you read the Dune prequels yet?

Another series that I very much got into afterwards was the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. After writing the initial series he went back and wrote a few prequels. I'm not sure whether or not to suggest reading them in chronological order by publish or plot.

His robot series is also very fascinating for those into those types of books. In the later books he even ties the Robot and Foundation books together.

Overall, from someone who has read all of the Dune books, I would suggest reading the Foundation series first.

Any great science fiction epic will immerse you within its world. So don't expect to find a book/series that parallels the Dune saga in story, but fails to astound on the same level.

Another classic sci-fi saga is Asimov's the Foundation series. Some stand alone classics include:
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Philip K. Dick
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
The Martian Chronicles - Ray Bradbury
2001: A Space Odyessy - Arthur C. Clarke

You might won't find anything like the Dune experience, but, there are still plenty more good reads in the sci-fi genre.

The "Dune" series was pretty darn good; definitely complex! It's been some time since I read it...as I recall, I liked the (long) beginning better than the end. I just know I liked it quite a bit! A whole society (matriarchal as I remember) built on the activities of giant worms...great stuff.

Don't know of a series like that at this time, tonight.

But I want to recommend a good sci-fi, just one book so far, called "The Traveler," by John Twelve Hawks. Great premise, great tension, a real page-turner, though the ending was not what I'd hoped. Still, there is supposed to be a second book in the series coming out this summer (is it out?)

and I just have to read more about these people..[!]. check it out if you can. It's in paperback. Be sure to get the first one first... :)
